At Staten Island University Hospital, we understand the importance of supporting and comforting patients and their families during a loved one’s final days. If you're interested in helping us, consider signing up as a hospice volunteer.
Hospice volunteersUniversity Hospice volunteers are essential members of the hospice team. After completing your volunteer training program, you will be prepared to fill a variety of roles, either as a patient care volunteer to provide direct care to hospice patients, or as an administrative volunteer to help with day-to-day activities in the hospice offices.
Patient care volunteersAs a patient care volunteer, you will visit patients in their homes, or in the nursing home or hospital. In addition to providing companionship and emotional support, you may help with activities that include direct patient care, child care, cooking, cleaning and running errands for the patient and family. University Hospice is one of the most important services offered through Staten Island University Hospital. Our mission is to meet the needs of patients, families and loved ones during a patient’s last days. When the time for hospice comes, we offer comprehensive palliative care that focuses on physical, social, emotional and spiritual support.
Description
Volunteers play an integral role at Staten Island University Hospital. We are looking for volunteers who are compassionate, professional, dedicated and reliable. We know that a small amount of time can make a big difference in someone’s life. Goals
As we provide compassionate services to patients and loved ones, we strive to:
Always offer the highest standard of care
Help you and the patient develop effective coping mechanisms
Meet your individual goals
Offer an atmosphere of comfort and compassion while helping you process the emotional impact of the situation
Plan all care with your primary input
Relieve pain, anxiety, discomfort and other unpleasant symptoms as much as possible
Respect patients’ dignity and enhance quality of life
