ORGANIZATION: Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care

These volunteers will visit with residents living in the Indian Cultural Unit and will assist them by communicating with them in their primary language.

Training and Education
Must complete general orientation provided by the Department of Volunteer Services.
Participate in on-the-job training.

Days and Hours
Varies as per needs of residents and patients

Assignment Description:

Essential Functions

  • Visit patients, as assigned, who need socialization and/or assistance while living at Parker.
  • Spend time talking with the patient, help with writing letters, take patient for a stroll around their unit or with nursing approval in other areas of the facility.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be able to communicate with residents housed in the Indian Cultural Unit, ideally will speak 2 or more languages
  • Must be able to follow directions from staff.
  • Understand the need for confidentiality and ability to maintain such.
  • Knowledge of Parker's layout and the assigned unit.
  • Must be able to follow directions from staff.
  • Must be able to walk for long distances.

Procedures:

Sign in and out of the online Volunteer website.
Observe infection control policies regarding wearing an appropriate mask and protective eyewear (which will be provided), handwashing, and social distancing.

Personal Skills, Abilities, Knowledge

  • Have a friendly, positive attitude.
  • Must be a self-starter.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to converse.

Physical Requirement
* Requires walking, standing, sitting, with possible lifting and reaching.

Machines, Tools and Equipment
Wheelchairs.

Length of Commitment

  • One 3- hour shift per week with a minimum one year commitment.
