ASCENDtials assists those in the BIPOC community to be signifiers of change and find aspirations in building knowledge of Self. We focus on giving those in the BIPOC community resources so that they can successfully advocate for themselves.
The Director of Advocacy and Community Organizing creates and implements strategic advocacy and organizing plans with the support of a small group of staff, community members, and volunteers. The primary role of this person is to serve as the point of contact for the online/ community and stakeholders.
- Develop a quarterly content marketing plan and editorial calendar.
- With the help of staff and volunteers, create engaging and shareable content for a blog, Facebook page, quarterly newsletters and/or promotional videos.
- Provide community feedback to the management and stakeholders.
- Plan and execute community initiatives and programs.
- Monitor social media campaigns and analyze web traffic from the online community using key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Find new marketing and outreach opportunities to push brand image and products.
- Work with journalists and PR agencies to ensure accurate brand representation.
- Participate in social events, corporate events, and workshops.
- Assist the Director in the administration and management of areas, including professional implementation of tasks and duties, conducting meetings.
- Supervise and evaluate the volunteers in the area.
- Abide by all policies; confront, enforce, and report violations of policies and inappropriate behavior in the assigned area. Assist officials or other responsible parties elsewhere on when requested to do so
- Record and report information accordingly. Complete other paperwork as required and directed by team
- Manage all Community budget funds, issue checks, and reconcile the account.
- Perform key inventory and complete required forms according to instructions.
- Create, monitor, and update common area inventories according to instructions.
- Organize and manage the volunteers; oversee and submit monthly duty schedules by established due dates; inventory duty office forms and supplies and restock as needed
- Serve as a resource, referral, and communication agent for staff and volunteers. Distribute paperwork, flyers, brochures, etc. according to instructions.
- Compile semester reports for submission to the Development and Fundraising Director
- Develop and maintain relationships with volunteer personnel
- Experience as a community organizer. Capacity to recruit community members, speak articulately about issues affecting immigrants and other working-class people, and develop strategies for campaigns.
- Familiarity with local civic, social justice, and political landscapes.
- Knowledge about the immigrant experience and the laws and policies affecting black citizens in California.
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal colleagues, as well as community partners.
- Experience working with under-resourced communities.
- Passionate about social justice. Experience with (or desire to learn) intersectional organizing, an organizing strategy that centers on the experiences and leadership of people who are affected by multiple forms of oppression. Capacity to work on anti-racist advocacy and organizing.
- Comfort with activism and public speaking, including civic engagement actions, conducting political and community education, facilitating groups, speaking with the media about matters affecting vulnerable populations, and conducting training of colleagues and volunteers.
- Oversees the programs, services and activities.
- Participates in strategic planning and preparation of operating budget.
- Facilitate project team meetings to monitor implementation, adjusting to identified challenges/barriers and solutions.
- Participates in fund-development, project design and grant writing.
- Represents the agency in the community and with both public and private engagement. strategic partners.
- Develops the Board of Directors, staff and cadre of volunteers that reflect the communities we serve.
Advocacy:
- Demonstrates commitment to inclusivity through our advocacy, communications and engagement activities.
- Demonstrate a broad and detailed understanding of the local, regional and national policy issues impacting the tourism industry
- Grow relationships with elected officials, their representatives and staff, meeting regularly, to advance the needs of the tourism community
- Track all County Board of Supervisors and City Council meeting agendas advising, in advance, on issues related to tourism and the BIPOC community advising the board on key issues
- Attend County Board of Supervisors, City Council, advisory body meetings and public workshops as directed
- Organize investor and partner advocacy for government, including Board of Supervisors, City Council, appropriate city management and general public meetings in addition to state and federal issues
- Engage investors and partners in direct outreach and advocacy to state and federal representatives through annual capitol lobby days, capitol and in-district meetings
- Draft communications to government and elected officials
- Regularly communicate with associations, lobbying groups, chambers, regional and state economic development organizations on issues of common interest
- Build relationships with key individuals at all levels in government and strategic partner organizations
- Create and serve as a member of committees
- Analyze, lead and participate in the implementation of community-based programs, projects and initiatives
- Advise and recommend a course of action for board members on key political, social, cultural, economic, environmental and sustainability issues impacting Board Members, investors, partners and colleagues
- Provide board input into policy recommendations, including those under development, impacting the tourism community and future opportunities
- Initiate and recommend ASCENDtials participation in strategic speaking opportunities creating awareness and engagement within corporate, government and community sectors.
Basic Qualifications
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree
- Has strong experience working with communities
- 3+ years of managerial experience
