Ohio Living values the importance of pet therapy and the health benefits that pets can provide. Did you know that just a few moments of stroking the fur of a pet therapy animal can initiate a reaction in the body that leads to decreased loneliness, depression and agitation as well as increased social interaction, nutrition intake and sense of well being. Unfortunately, too often our patients are unable to have a pet within their home, nursing home, assisted living or group home in which they reside. Medicare also recognizes the importance of volunteers in the delivery of hospice care. Medicare requires that hospice utilize volunteers from their local community to augment the care the hospice agency provides. Nationally, over 100,000 people serve as hospice volunteers and give millions of hours of their time to serve terminally ill patients and their families.
