Big Brothers Big Sisters of Vermont (BBBSVT) is asking adults throughout Vermont to "Join the Village" by volunteering as a "Big" for one of over 100 children currently ready and waiting for a mentor. Mentoring is fun, flexible, and a powerful way to make a real difference in one’s community by providing a safe space for a young person to explore, learn and grow, igniting their potential for a bright future.
BBBSVT is dedicated to defending the potential of children and youth through one-to-one mentoring, an evidence-based method of prevention that keeps kids engaged, builds resilience and helps to mitigate the negative effects of trauma. Youth "Littles" are between the ages of 6 and 17. Mentor "Bigs" are all ages from college students to retirees. The one-to-one "matches" meet 2-3 times a month and establish connections through simple activities and outings. Community-based, school-based and virtual options are available.
Mentoring experience helpful but not necessary. Training and support is provided for all volunteers.

Description
As a leading youth mentoring organization, BBBS of Vermont is uniquely poised to empower, engage and connect this upcoming generation of youth. We offer a proactive solution to prevent youth disconnection, driving post-secondary success and teaching essential life skills that will ultimately launch these future leaders into college, career and beyond.
It is our goal that children achieve outcomes and develop skills that increase their ability to make positive decisions, avoid risky behaviors and succeed academically. For over 45 years, we have provided mentoring services to children and youth in Vermont using evidence-based, best practice mentoring.
Mentor "Bigs" meet with their mentee "Littles" once a week for 1-2 hrs over the course of 12 months. Littles are between the ages of 6-18. Mentor matches meet either at a child's school or in the community. Activities range from reading or helping with homework to sports activities, arts and crafts, or just chatting over a shared meal.
To qualify as a Big you'll submit an application, complete an interview, submit references, pass a background and fingerprint check, and attend an online training and orientation. You'll also need to commit to at least one year in the program. We'll match you with a child you'll be compatible with and provide training and support along the way. You probably have more to offer than you realize, and it doesn't take as much time as you might think!
