Birthdays are a big part of what home means at the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus. Every residents receives a birthday card signed by staff on their birthday but we are thinking bigger and we need your help! We dream of having a Birthday Bash each month that includes cake and other fun birthday activities for members of our community. Many of our residents are faced with financial barriers that prevent them from enjoying cake on their birthday; or, they don’t have family to celebrate with, so we are excited to show them how much our community cares through this event. To host a Birthday Bash, you would need to sponsor the funds/make 140 pieces of cake (or cupcakes) as we want to ensure all residents are invited. If you prefer, we can purchase the cake for you for a $50 dollar contribution. You can also bring in fun party supplies (table clothes, themed paper plates, streamers, etc.) to decorate and really make it feel like a birthday party. Upon arrival, you and your group of 5 or less will be able to decorate, serve, and get to know some amazing folks that call the YSHC home.

Birthday bashes can take place Monday, Wednesday or Thursday between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.

About YMCA Supportive Housing Campus

Location:

2 SW 9th Street, Des Moines, IA 50309, US

Mission Statement

Y Supportive Housing is a community solution to help eliminate homelessness by providing Hope, Dignity, and Support in the form of permanent supportive housing. This Housing First Model helps people who are homeless (or who are at-risk of homelessness) move into stable and secure permanent housing supplemented by supportive services. Case management, transportation assistance, food/clothing/hygiene pantries, rental assistance, and other services help people meet their basic needs and reach their life goals. The campus provides a place to call home for 140 men and women. The constant wait list demonstrates the need for affordable housing in the community.

Description

Our belief that everyone is worthy to live a life of meaning guides everything we do; YOU make a difference in the lives of so many by supporting us in this important work!

We provide a place to call home for 140 men and women who are transitioning out of homelessness and into a life of safety and stability. When asking our residents what home at the YSHC means to them, this is what they shared...

"A place that I am safe and comfortable. The YSHC provides that for me. No one being able to just walk in makes me feel safe from the demons in my past. Controlling my own heat and air is very comforting." - Mary, a resident of the YSHC

"A home to me means that it’s the most peaceful and safe place to live. It is something I have lost before because of the choices I made. I believe that’s why I have an appreciation for the home I have at the YSHC. I would also like to say thank you to all the staff and volunteers. It means a great deal that people care and want you to succeed. I can say I have a home and a village all under the same roof." - Kent, a resident of the YSHC

Volunteers are essential to ensuring that we are able to carry out our mission to provide hope, dignity and support to those who call the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus their home. With so many different ways to volunteer... you can start making a difference today!
