As a Tech Center Counselor Volunteer, you will play a critical role in creating an empowering environment for our participants. From assisting with setup to encouraging students to express their creativity through their projects, you will be a part of the team that assures our participants leave the center prepared and confident to explore new career opportunities that they would not otherwise have. In addition to assisting our participants, you will have the opportunity to work alongside mission driven individuals invested in elevating those helping us carry out our mission.

Mission:

The SoLa I CAN Foundation (est. 2017), the 501(c)(3) nonprofit affiliate of SoLa Impact, is built on a simple premise: If you CAN see it, you CAN be it. SoLa aims to improve the lives of South LA residents through access to educational, technological, and economic opportunities. We work towards uplifting underserved Black and Latinx communities using our four pillars of change: 1) Access to Career Development & Entrepreneurship; 2) Access to Education & Tech Innovation; 3) Access to Financial Literacy & Economic Mobility; 4) Access to College Readiness & Scholarships.

Impact:

To connect the South LA community with 21st century opportunities, SoLa I CAN opened the doors to the SoLa Technology and Entrepreneurship Center in January 2022. The first of its kind in South LA. We are providing after-school programs to middle, high and elementary school students to learn and discover new essential skills in areas like graphic design, coding, game design, robotics, and more. With access to the newest technology, students will be immersed in everything from virtual reality to gaming and everything in between all in a fun and covid safe environment. SoLa Impact is seeking energetic, passionate counselors to join us for numerous volunteer opportunities at the center.

Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Work with SoLa I CAN team to assure daily programming is running smoothly
  • Familiarize yourself with the daily schedule and venue to guide participants
  • Encourage students to follow their schedule in a timely manner
  • Assist team with daily check in and check out procedure
  • Assist with daily food distribution and clean up
  • Help camp instructors with their workshops as needed
  • Assure that COVID-19 safety protocols are being followed. Ex: participants wearing masks


The center is kicking off with 12-week immersive experiences across various subject matters:
  • Graphic Design
  • Robotics and Coding
  • Video Game Design
  • AR/VR
  • Computer Programming
  • Animation
  • Music Production
  • Cyber Security

Experience:
  • At least 18 years old
  • Able to pass a background check
  • Some skill with technology, using computers, and working with diverse populations
  • Must be fully vaccinated and willing to follow COVID-19 safety protocols including daily rapid testing onsite*
