Teen Court is a diversion program designed for juvenile offenders who have committed a minor misdemeanor offense and have admitted guilt. Offenders must be between the ages of 11 and 17. Offenders are held accountable for their offense and receive consequences such as community service, additional educational opportunities, restitution and other sanctions deemed appropriate by a jury of their peers, who are either teenage volunteers or teenagers in the program. Teen Court allows youth volunteers to play an active role in the community and educates them on the functions and operations of the judicial system. The program gives the offenders and volunteers a first-hand opportunity to experience how the court system works.
