Community-Based Mentoring involves a volunteer, called a "Big" and a child, called a "Little" - who spend individualized time together on a regular basis, typically 2-4 times per month. During weekly or bi-weekly outings, filled with conversations and shared activities, they develop a relationship that helps children manage the everyday challenges that are part of "growing up." During the time spent with their Big, Littles gain new skills, explore new interests, and test behaviors that expand their experience base beyond their family or neighborhood.

Over the course of time, children gain confidence in themselves, acquire new skills and competencies, and develop an enhanced capacity to care for others - all tasks that are a part of developing healthy maturity. Volunteers experience a sense of discovery and enjoyment as they see the world of possibility open up through a child's eyes.

Children served in the Community Based Program live in the communities of Abbotsford, Athens, D.C. Everest, Marathon, Merrill, Mosinee, and Wausau.

Nestled in the heart of Wausau, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northcentral Wisconsin is also excited to share 'The Nest’ with our matches and families. The Nest is a welcoming mentoring center designed to nurture growth and inspire potential. Its warm, inviting atmosphere is enhanced by cozy, sunlit spaces that encourage creativity and open dialogue. The Nest also boasts a vibrant collection of games and books, offering a range of activities that stimulate intellectual curiosity and foster social interaction. The game area invites playful competition and teamwork, while the library provides a retreat for reflection and learning. Adding to its practical support, The Nest includes a fully equipped laundry area and kitchen. Focusing on fun and inclusiveness, The Nest provides a safe haven where matches of all ages can come to learn, connect, and thrive, making it a cornerstone for transformative growth and lifelong learning.
