ORGANIZATION: SOUTH END NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORS

Image_202108241920

We usually hold our new tutor training on the second and third Saturdays of January, September, and November. It is a two-day training that takes place on these two Saturdays from 8:45 AM to 4:00 PM. We will provide a light breakfast, snacks, and beverages. Just bring a sandwich and a pen.

The new tutor training dates for 2024-25 are:
September 14 and 21, 2024
November 9 and 16, 2024
January 11 and 18, 2025

The first day focuses on the effects that racism and poverty have on our students. We also discuss brain development and the effects of stress and trauma. The second day focuses on the 5 components of reading and lesson planning.

We work with elementary age students. They need to be in the first or second grade to start in our program and they may remain with us through elementary school if they would like. Since our goal and hope is to have all our students reading on grade level by the end of 3rd grade, we feel we need to start early to have a chance of succeeding. The reason for this is that children learn to read in the first three grades and then read to learn from fourth grade on.

About SOUTH END NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORS

Location:

PO BOX 61, ALBANY, NY 12201, US

Mission Statement

Connecting elementary school children with caring and dedicated tutors, our one-on-one tutoring program enhances literacy, fosters creativity, and supplements classroom learning in the South End of Albany. Reading is essential *** One-on-one tutoring works *** Every child has worth

Description

After tutoring within a nearby elementary school for several years, a number of us decided to do more and started an after-school tutoring program located about a block east of the elementary school 3 1/2 years ago. The school is located in a low-income neighborhood and the only 13% of the children in the 3rd - 6th grade read on grade level.

Starting our program with 1st and 2nd graders, and remaining with them through their elementary years, it is the hope to have all our students reading on grade level by the end of third grade. This gives them a chance to be successful students when they reach middle school.

We work with the students to improve reading, writing and problem solving skills. The five components of reading are stressed - phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. We publish an anthology of the students' writing at the end of each year. And there is a STEM problem with no "right" answer to challenge their creativity each month.

We have had a two of our students moved into the elementary school's Young Scholars Program.

We are looking for tutors who will be committed to working with the same student for at least one school year. We also need board members and a webmaster.
