Produce Sorting at Kanbe’s
Kanbe's Markets is a nonprofit based in KC with the mission to increase access to fresh produce in underserved Kansas City neighborhoods through our food redirection program. Our volunteers sort donated 'imperfect' produce from wholesalers and local farms, (apples, bananas, berries, melons, tomatoes, citrus) and redirect it to one of four channels:
Healthy Corner Stores: 50 locations in underserved neighborhoods, selling the top tier produce at or below market cost.
Donations (to other food related organizations): Produce which might have a few spots but are still edible and can be used for making meals is given to partner organizations for distribution.
Animals: Produce that is too far gone for humans BUT is not completely spoiled is sorted and distributed to local farms, particularly animal rescue farms.
Compost: For items that are far past their prime, composting prevents the food from going to landfills, and creates compost for local gardeners.

Mission Statement
Kanbe’s Markets is a nonprofit organization providing access to fresh, affordable and healthy foods to people experiencing food insecurity. By providing innovative food delivery systems that are more inclusive, enhance small businesses and empower individuals to make healthy choices, we step closer toward an equitable future of food.
Description
Kanbe’s Markets began looking at the local food system in Kansas City, Missouri in 2016. The lack of grocery stores and limited transportation resources on the east side of the city’s racially-dividing line, Troost Avenue, has created a stark division of residents experiencing food insecurity.
After identifying the hundreds of locally owned convenience stores, gas stations and corner bodegas with deep ties in the community, the first Healthy Corner Store location began to sell fresh and affordable fruits and vegetables in 2018.
Today, Kanbe’s provides fresh food access for over 250,000 residents- and counting.
