Volunteer Opportunity Title: Public Speaking Volunteer
Start and End Date: Adult Program: February - April; Youth Program: April - June
Description: The Utah Refugee Center is in search of volunteers who can either teach or offer teaching assistance/group mentorship for our Public Speaking program. Depending on the time of the year, the program will either work with adults or with youth. Teachers will follow a pre-defined curriculum, while teaching assistants/mentors will support with breakout sessions (if virtual) or group discussions (if in-person), and will offer guidance on individual speeches.
EXPECTED ACTIVITIES
- Attend program weekly, either in person or online* (*currently online only due to COVID)
- Teach or support existing curriculum, help students with class discussions and individual speeches
VOLUNTEER QUALIFICATIONS
- Communication skills
- Comfortable working with adults or youth
- Ability to use Zoom/Google Meet/etc
- Adaptability
- Cultural sensitivity
- Passed background check (provided by our Know Your Neighbor program)
BENEFITS/SUPPORT PROVIDED
The volunteer will have the opportunity to learn more about refugees and skills such as virtual classroom management, public speaking, and presentation.

Mission Statement
The Utah Refugee Center serves two purposes: to foster opportunities for refugees to access family-sustaining employment, and to support refugee communities’ efforts to find appropriate solutions towards integration.
Description
As part of the Department of Workforce Service, the Utah Refugee Center offers employment, intake, and program services to assist refugees in Salt Lake City with their integration journey. We serve as a hub that offers commonly needed services such as job search assistance, ESL, citizenship preparation, and basic computer skills. We also leverage skill-based volunteerism as well as targeted in-kind and financial donations to provide free trainings and programs for adults and youth with interests ranging from I.T. and computer programming to leadership and public speaking to sewing and product development. If you are interested in serving your local refugee community, we have an opportunity for you!
