Norfolk County RSVP is seeking volunteers age 55 + to tutor Immigrants and other adults seeking to improve their English-speaking skills. Tutoring is conducted virtually either by telephone of a video platform such as Zoom, depending on the preferences of the tutor and tutee. Hours and times are flexible, but typically, volunteers tutor 2-3 hours per week, This program is conducted by the Boston-Chinatown Neighborhood Center.
Here are some specific ways to get involved:
One on one ESOL tutoring, mostly will be done remotely, but could be done in person between 12:30 - 5:30 PM on site at our Quincy location on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Monday conversation class co-teacher: Works with another volunteer to run an optional conversation class for students on Zoom on Mondays, either 10-12 in the AM or 6-8 in the PM. Students will be loosely leveled into beginner or intermediate groups.
ESOL classroom assistant: Works with paid teacher to help students in the classroom, in person on Tuesdays and Thursdays, on Zoom on Wednesdays. Class times are either 10-12:30 for the AM or 6-8:30 for the PM. This can be once a week or more commitment, based on volunteers’ availability.
Front desk receptionist in Quincy: Helps during our Tuesday and/or Thursday class days by "manning" the front desk reception area and fielding students’ inquiries. Ability to speak some Chinese would be helpful but not necessary. The volunteer could commit to any chunk of time between 9 AM and 8:30 PM on either or both days, as available, For whatever time the volunteer chooses, he/she needs to be able to commit to a 3 hour segment.Interview prep coach: Works to support the workplace development team by helping students seeking jobs with resume writing and interview practicing. These volunteers will be trained by the workforce specialists in what BCNC is looking for in this role. However, experience in HR or management would be a welcome addition. This role is only done occasionally as students come to us with their need for help.
This RSVP volunteer opportunity is available to adults 55 and older..
