TRRC is looking for volunteers that are at least 14 years-old and can dedicate 2-3 hours of their time per week.

TRRC welcomes volunteers interested in grooming/tacking horses, leading/side walking horses in lessons and assisting with barn care. Many students have earned eagle scout recognition and earned boy/girl scout outdoor awards at TRRC. We will provide training to volunteers working with horses, so no experience is necessary. We welcome volunteers with a variety of skill sets!

Mission Statement

The Therapeutic & Recreational Riding Center, Inc. ("TRRC") is registered in Maryland as a 501(c)(3) public charity, dedicated to enriching the lives of people by providing therapeutic and recreational riding activities in a natural environment.

Description

Living in suburban Howard County between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., Helen and John Tuel had a pony for their two growing boys. Inspired by a neighbor who asked if Helen could teach her son to ride the pony, she decided to become a riding teacher for individuals with Down Syndrome and other special needs. She left her career as a dental hygienist and went on to obtain a doctorate from Vanderbilt University. John concentrated on learning stable management. They acquired their current 55-acre farm with a house, a barn and abundant pastures in Glenwood, MD. Over 30 years and many improvements later, they continue to work to improve and expand TRRC.
