Police Violence in Chile : support protestors and democracy

ORGANIZATION: CIVIC WORKS

chile_protests

Human rights activists in Chile see striking similarities in police violence in Chile and elsewhere. The protests have been fueled by violent overreactions by authorities to what started as a protest against a raise of metro fares. Over a thousand protestors have been injured and they are feeling that even so, the world does not know what is happening and why it matters. The sacrifices have led to pressure for a constitution referendum in Chile to change a constitution that entrenches power back to Pinochet's time.

The protestors on the front lines would like us to tell their stories so that people can understand the relevance and similarities. They also would like help with legal actions on behalf of many who have been injured by police forces. We are partnering in particular with the case of a young man who was shot in the face with rubber bullets, he is from a community without a lot of resources and has not had the ability to take legal action in his case.

The poor communities in Chile are particularly hard hit by the economic impact of COVID-19. The people we work with also are doing food support directly in those communities.

Mission Statement

We created civ.works as a platform for all of us to work together to overcome the corrupting influence of money in politics. Together we can address bad policy, legislation and to hold all of our elected officials accountable. For democracy to work -our government must represent "We the People". civ.works: Together. We can.

Description

civ.works is a privacy protected social platform built for meaningful civic action.

The concept of civ.works is to finally provide a societal machine to stand up against something created nearly 50 years ago -and begin the process of empowering citizens again.
