- DUE TO HIGH VOLUME OF APPLICANTS, WE ARE TEMPORARILY ACCEPTING APPLICANTS LOCATED IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA ONLY (volunteer opportunity will still be virtual via Zoom). NEW DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR LOS ANGELES VOLUNTEERS: MAY 31ST AT 11:59PM -
We're looking for STEAM professionals or students with experience in healthcare: healthcare advocates, activists, pre-med or medical students, dentists, retired healthcare workers, etc. You will be a mentor to elementary-age students interested in healthcare through our pre-med themed summer camp.
In our Pre-Med summer camp module, students will learn about biology, epidemiology, and the healthcare system. They will work on a capstone project that will uplift their communities.
Program Details - all online via Zoom: As a Pre- Med Mentor, you will be a resource for our Pre- Med summer camp students ages 7-11 as they learn the fundamentals of biology and healthcare, contextualize the current pandemic, and complete a capstone project that will uplift the community. You will help us design lessons and, using this hands-on knowledge of their curriculum, guide students through their projects and share your love of STEAM. Time Commitment: June 4th 10am-4pm PDT - Orientation and Curriculum Jam: During orientation, we will go over the program expectations and introduce you to your fellow volunteers. Unique to our program, you'll also participate in a Curriculum Jam: we want to leverage the impressive knowledge and diverse experiences of our Pre- Med volunteer mentors to bring our students the best curriculum possible. During our Curriculum Jam, we'll teach you our unique curriculum development methods, you'll bring your healthcare expertise, and together we'll collaborate to create impactful hands-on lessons for our students...you'll have a say in what they'll learn! You'll leave with new skills and our students will have the unique chance to engage in lessons informed by your real-world experience. June 23rd 1-2pm PDT: First day of camp! Meet the students (all online) and introduce them to the world of healthcare! July 2nd 1-2pm PDT: Career Day! Present your experience in healthcare with props and stories to get the students excited about a future in the medical field. July 7th - Aug 4th (Tues/Thurs ~1:45-2pm PDT): Drop in to our lessons during Mentor Minute (last 10-15 minutes of each lesson) to review what the students have learned, allow them to ask questions, provide encouragement. Flexible commitment - attend when you can. Aug 6th 1-2pm PDT: Presentation Day! Our students will present their capstone projects. You will have the option to continue as a mentor during the school year.
