The Guanlan Scholarship Foundation has been supporting village girls with scholarships to keep them in school through high school in a left-behind area of western China since the year 2000. Continued schooling empowers the girls to imagine broader horizons and take advantage of better living and work opportunities beyond subsistence farming, low-paid, insecure hard labor, or worse. Better educated girls can take better care of themselves and their families and are better able to resist workplace abuses. Better educated girls are more empowered.
The Foundation has an updated website and presence on Facebook and Instagram; however, it needs re-design and development, also active posting and blogging to raise interest. The Foundation is lead by its founder, Dr. Vilma Seeberg, and has an annual Scholarship enrolment at any one time of approximately 41 young village girls, many of whom are rural migrants. They are undocumented and have no access to urban social welfare or education, are treated like non-citizens, experience discrimination, poverty, and a second-class education. The Scholarship pays for the fees and tuition to graduate from high school, which propels them into a better starting position in the labor market - and gives them the confidence to seek better opportunities, including higher education.
The Foundation welcomes also volunteers who are proficient in Chinese. We welcome young volunteers who are activist and creative.

Mission Statement
Educate a girl today and she will create lasting change, one girl, one village, multiple generations! Support rural girls in left-behind China to get a good education.
Description
Since 2000, the Foundation has collected funds to support scholarships for over 130 school girls in western China, where their opportunities are extremely limited.
The Foundation has a close relationship with a community-base partner organization in Shaanxi that qualifies up to 10 new Guanlan Sisters based on family need and distributes the scholarship annually.
The Foundation maintains records of each scholarship recipient's family need status and educational attainment. The scholarship recipients report in writing annually how they are progressing through school and what their specific needs are.
Dr. Seeberg, president, and team members of the Foundation visit with the scholarship recipients and their families to understand how their lives are developing, if they are safe, in school, or gainfully employed and otherwise doing well. We alsostay in touch with the Guanlan Sisters on various Chinese language social media platforms.
