American Red Cross Announces COVID-19 Severe Blood Shortage - Please give blood!

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: American Red Cross - Massachusetts Region

The American Red Cross now faces a severe blood shortage due to an unprecedented number of blood drive cancellations in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

The U.S. surgeon general has said, "You can still go out and give blood. We’re worried about potential blood shortages in the future." A blood shortage is a health care crisis on top of the coronavirus pandemic. Blood is perishable and cannot be stockpiled in advance.

We at the American Red Cross of Massachusetts encourage citizens who are healthy and feeling well to make an appointment to donate as soon as possible by visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to schedule an appointment. All our donor centers are open across the state and local drives in Eastern MA are still being scheduled.

We urge Massachusetts businesses, community organizations, government agencies, fire houses, and schools to continue hosting blood drives. These are controlled events with trained staff and appropriate safety measures to protect donors and recipients. Donating blood is a safe process and giving blood does not impact or weaken the immune system.

We want to reassure citizens that donating blood and social distancing are not mutually exclusive. Blood drives have the highest standards of safety and infection control-and do not fall in the category of "mass gatherings". We have also implemented standard staff health assessments prior to arrival at all blood donation sites to ensure staff are healthy the day of the drive.

For more information about hosting a Blood Drive please contact MAVolunteers@redcross.org .

Location:

Mission Statement

The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

Description

Every single day, the American Red Cross helps people in emergencies. Whether its one displaced family, thousands of disaster victims, or providing care and comfort to an ill or injured service member or veteran or support to a military family member, our vital work is made possible by people like you. It is through the time and care of ordinary people that we can do extraordinary things. We operate the largest food pantry in New England, we empower volunteers as leaders of the organization, we offer training and support. Whether it is standing with a family on the sidewalk at a house fire to offer comfort and care or it is contacting someone in the armed services who has a new baby, the Red Cross is a gentle presence of compassion and assistance.
