Hours

A commitment to 40 hours a year is required. Volunteer hours can be flexible to suit the needs of the volunteer.

Full day: 9 am - 4 pm

Partial day: anytime between 9 am and 4 pm.

Volunteer Manager

Summary

Playologist Volunteers rotate through different stations around the museum, facilitating play through prompts, encouragements, and participation. For example, you might be in the Follow That Food exhibit where you could pretend to be at a restaurant and ask a child about the meal he has prepared for you. You might be in the Make Your Mark exhibit and play along with a few children by designing the perfect city.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all volunteer policies as outlined in the Volunteer Handbook.
  • Assist and support museum staff in maintaining a safe environment for guests.
  • Engage children in activities throughout the grounds, galleries, and as assigned.
  • Motivate children to learn through play.
  • Ensure galleries are reasonably tidy for guests.
  • Use appropriate communication skills to interact with children, Parents/Caregivers of children, other volunteers, all LCM Staff, and visitors.
  • Coordinate with Play Facilitators, Museum Experience Manager, Assistant Museum Experience Manager, and LCM Staff.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Description

The Louisiana Children's Museum was founded in 1986. The museum was located in the Warehouse District until 2019, when we opened our new 8.5 acre location in City Park! Our gallery spaces focus on Literacy, Environment, Arts & Culture, and Health & Wellness. Louisiana Children's Museum promotes hands-on, participatory learning for children ages birth to 8 years. Encouraging discovery through observation, inquiry, creative construction, role-playing, problem-solving, and free-play, the Museum motivates children to develop their cognitive, physical and social skills while enjoying fruitful interaction with adults and peers.

Do you like fun and the sound of laughter? How about helping kids discover their immense potential? Louisiana Children's Museum welcomes volunteers for a wide range of roles including assisting with learning and play experiences our galleries, education programs, special events, admin, maintenance and other roles! We currently have youth (15+) and adult volunteer opportunities.
