Tutoring & Reading Buddies

Most tutors work with youth in elementary school and focus on meeting grade-level math and reading requirements. Other tutors have focused on SAT and GED prep with our teens and seniors, helping prepare them for upcoming tests or improve their scores.

Tutors typically work on-site at Friends of the Children-Seattle on weekday afternoons and are expected to commit to a minimum of 3 to 9 months of weekly 2-4 hour visits. We ask tutors to have a higher education degree or pursuing a higher education degree.

All volunteers who will have continuous access to youths will also have to undergo a background search that includes fingerprinting.

What you will get to do:

  • Work with our youth to provide tutoring and educational assistance
  • Build meaningful relationships with youth
  • Gain experience working with youth in a warm, friendly, educational setting

What you can expect as a Volunteer:

  • Orientation, training, and support from staff
  • Clear expectations and an academic assessment from the youth’s teacher
  • Ongoing feedback with mentors and educators
  • To be welcomed and respected as part of the team
  • To be valued for your unique abilities and talents

About Friends of the Children

Location:

PO BOX 18886, SEATTLE, WA 98118, US

Mission Statement

To accelerate generational change, Friends of the Children identifies youth facing the toughest challenges and connects them with professional mentors who guide them to develop their greatest potential and achieve their goals. From kindergarten through graduation, no matter what.

Description

Friends of the Children is the only youth development program breaking the cycle of poverty and violence, preventing school dropout, teen parenting, and criminal activity -- by selecting the most vulnerable children, and making a 12 1/2 year commitment to their success through graduation. It works because:

  • We select children who face the most challenges in their home and school environments.
  • We start early,in kindergarten or first grade, when the child is eager to learn and grow, but needs the constancy and guidance of a professional mentor.
  • We pair each child with a full-time salaried mentor; each child receives atleast four hours of mentoring per week.
  • We stay for the long-term, until they graduate from high school, prepared for college and the workforce, no matter what.
