Next.js Coders for Human Rights Testimony Database

ORGANIZATION: CIVIC WORKS

In many places right now, people can be disappeared and hurt - often by the government - with no system of justice to stop it. Protestors in Hong Kong; Kurds in Syria; activists in Iraq - their stories may appear on social media, but they are not being collected systematically in one place except for a few prominent dissidents.

The Uyghurs in particular are being disappeared into camps in huge numbers, and we have worked with some families and in cooperation with a dedicated person (Gene Bunin) who has created a database of their testimonies at http://shahit.biz . (he can also use help!)

We are working to create a similar database for other regions, including Iraq, Syria, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia and others.

We have a small team of dedicated volunteers working on this project, the backend is in Go (Gorilla Toolkit) and the front end was in React but is now migrated to Next.js. We have a lot of small things that still need to be done and we could use help! Coders welcome and ideally a project manager to help keep things organized and on track. Its a little different than a traditional role as everyone is a volunteer, so timelines have to be more flexible, and we just want to find the best way to utilize everyone's contribution as best we can.

We checked the 'COVID-19' box as of course people who have been kidnapped or are in detention centers are at an increased risk of transmission, as well as the other dangers.

Mission Statement

We created civ.works as a platform for all of us to work together to overcome the corrupting influence of money in politics. Together we can address bad policy, legislation and to hold all of our elected officials accountable. For democracy to work -our government must represent "We the People". civ.works: Together. We can.

Description

civ.works is a privacy protected social platform built for meaningful civic action.

The concept of civ.works is to finally provide a societal machine to stand up against something created nearly 50 years ago -and begin the process of empowering citizens again.
