Fifteen years ago we formed our Auxiliary Board to engage active and altruistic young professionals. The group has a growing membership of over 265 individuals. The purpose of the Board is to support the mission of the Big Shoulders Fund through volunteering in the schools, outreach, and fundraising.

The Auxiliary Board has volunteered at school service days, arranged for members to tutor, mentor students, participate on Advisory Boards, held fundraisers and hosted happy hours for socializing and networking.

Since its inception, the Auxiliary Board has been able to provide nearly 1,000 scholarships to students in elementary and high school. This is quite an accomplishment. The students are very excited for the assistance and we are thrilled to have the Auxiliary Board help us provide the assistance. Big Shoulders distributes over 6,000 scholarships each year and the Auxiliary Board's Scholarship is a huge help to this. The Auxiliary Board has been working so hard to raise funds for the scholarships and are excited to see what their scholars do this year.

Currently, there are three Auxiliary Board committees: Fundraising, Service, and Membership. Auxiliary Board members can help plan fundraisers, volunteer with Big Shoulders schools and children, and promote the Auxiliary Board and recruit new members. Besides the committees, we have many volunteer opportunities available in the schools as mentors, tutors, board members, coaches and more.

You can become involved as much or as little as you would like.

About The Big Shoulders Fund

Location:

212 W. Van Buren, Suite 900, Chicago, IL 60607, US

Mission Statement

Big Shoulders Fund is an independent charitable organization that serves inner-city Catholic schools which provide a quality, values-based education for Chicago’s children, thereby contributing to stronger communities.

Description

Big Shoulders Fund was founded in 1986 as an organization to help support Chicago’s inner-city Catholic schools. Many of our students face disruptive family situations, gangs, crime, drugs, poverty, and racism. Of the nearly 20,000 children enrolled in the 75 schools - 61 elementary and 14 high schools - Big Shoulders support, 80% are minorities, and 66% are living at or below the poverty level and 32% are not Catholic. Today, Big Shoulders has expanded upon that initial strategic vision by taking a proactive rather than supporting role in four major areas - scholarships and enrichment, operational improvements, academic programs, and leadership development - with the goal of not just strengthening schools, but whole communities, and preparing students for life-long success.

By supporting these schools, Big Shoulders strives to provide Chicago with a new generation of competent, well-educated and ethically responsible citizens who will become the future leaders of our city; give children a daily environment that will help teach them to be caring and trusting adults, and foster stability within communities through concerned local schools. This investment is paying off with 96% of students graduating high school, 86% of scholars matriculating on to college, 92% making it to their sophomore year of college, and alums having jobs by 25, voting and giving back with their time, talent and treasure at twice the national average.
