ORGANIZATION: The Salvation Army - San Jose, CA

Volunteer Title: Dance Instructor

Reports To: Deborah Reynolds

Schedule: Mondays thru Thursdays, for ~1 hour select time between 10:30am-11:30am (1 volunteer needed each week)

Position Overview: The Senior Dance Instructor will design, and lead dance classes tailored specifically for seniors, promoting physical fitness, social engagement, and emotional well-being. The ideal candidate will have a passion for dance and experience working with older adults.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Class Instruction:
    • Develop and teach engaging dance classes that accommodate various fitness levels and mobility issues.
    • Utilize styles such as ballroom, line dancing, or gentle movement to encourage participation and enjoyment.
  • Program Development:
    • Create a curriculum that enhances physical fitness, coordination, and flexibility while ensuring a fun and supportive environment.
    • Incorporate music and movements that resonate with seniors to enhance their experience.
  • Individual Support:
    • Provide personalized attention and modifications to ensure all participants can safely engage in class activities.
    • Encourage social interaction and community building among participants.
  • Performance Opportunities:
    • Organize recitals or showcase events to celebrate students' progress and encourage participation.
    • Collaborate with participants to create simple routines for performances if desired.
  • Health and Safety:
    • Monitor the health and safety of participants during classes, ensuring a safe environment.
    • Maintain CPR/First Aid certification and be prepared to assist in emergencies.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in dance instruction, preferably with seniors or in a community setting.
  • Knowledge of dance styles suitable for older adults.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Patience and enthusiasm for working with diverse age groups.

Working Conditions

May be required to stand for extended periods of time.

Please be aware this role requires indoor activity and is working with seniors (55+ years old)

Appropriate Attire: Please wear closed-toe shoes (not sandals, heels, flipflops). Shirts should be short or long-sleeved (no spaghetti straps, strapless, sleeveless, mid-riff showing or tank top types). Shorts/dresses/skirts should be longer in length, appropriate for comfortably bending and reaching items.

Required:

· Age Requirements: 18 or older. You must be confirmed to participate. No walk-ins.

· Register as volunteer for Dance Instructor

· Complete onboarding paperwork

· Attend Volunteer Orientation

· Volunteers going over 20 hours must complete a Background Check
