Enjoy a day outside helping elementary aged students connect with nature! Volunteers work with a staff environmental educator, engage students on a one-on-one or small group basis, and help with logistical tasks during the field trip. Each year, we see over 6,000 youth during our field trip programs that cover ecology, bugs, water quality, and more. For many children, this is one of their first outdoor learning experiences and it is important to have many chaperones around to facilitate a unique and wonderful experience. Being a field trip volunteer is a great way to gain educational experience and help support local youth. This program is perfect for people of all ages!

Volunteers must:

  • Be able to pass a background check.
  • Enjoy spending time outdoors.
  • Enjoy spending time with children and helping them learn.
  • Commit to volunteering at least once every 2 weeks.
  • Be available during school daytime hours. Field trips are scheduled Tuesday - Friday, generally 9:30 am - 1:30 pm during the school year.

Potential tasks:
  • Prep classrooms for field trips (i.e. set out tools, books, assignments).
  • Lead small groups of students in educational activities.
  • Encourage good behavior.
  • Have fun, explore and learn alongside students!
  • Clean up & debrief following a field trip.
Benefits:
  • No prior environmental science knowledge is necessary. We will train you!
  • Access ongoing training opportunities! Learn how to identify plants and salamanders, explore new teaching philosophies, and investigate equity in education.
  • Spend time on the beautiful Columbia Springs campus, complete with woods, streams, and a hatchery built in 1938!
