Do you have a passion for teaching adults?

Volunteer as a One-to-One tutor with Permian Basin Adult Literacy Center. Work with an adult who speaks English but struggles with reading and writing to develop their literacy skills.

Our literacy tutors teach individual adult students at pre-approved, public locations in the Permian Basin. ***Tutoring pairs may NOT meet in the home of a tutor or student. The pair is encouraged to set their own meeting schedule based on each person’s availability (including outside of PBALC office hours).

Many of our One-to-One students struggle with dyslexia or other learning disabilities. Volunteers will complete training for the Barton Reading and Spelling System, the curriculum, and teaching method which will be used for One-to-One instruction. No prior teaching experience is needed.

Please note- all volunteer instructors must be 18 or older. Volunteers will be required to fill out a volunteer application, pay a $38.00 criminal background check fee, and complete a volunteer orientation.

Mission Statement

Permian Basin Adult Literacy Center develops the literacy skills of adults so they can achieve their goals, improve their lives, and impact our community.

Description

Permian Basin Adult Literacy Center, Inc. (PBALC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

The PBALC Adult Literacy Program is helping adults improve their own skills so that they may also have a positive and lifelong impact on the educational achievements of future generations. To address these needs, we provide three primary services, including: English Language Learning (ELL); Adult Education and Literacy (AEL - reading and writing skills); and Digital Literacy (DL). We assign literacy skill levels through program enrollment, goal setting, and testing, which enables us to provide materials and tutoring specific to each student. The PBALC staff maintains continuous contact with all students and provides support through progress checks, resources, and encouragement.
