Are you looking to do something different this summer?

Are you looking to make a tangible impact on the lives of children?

Are you open to learning more about yourself and challenging your assumptions about the world?

Are you committed to working as a team member in a challenging environment?

Summer Camp Counselors who join BECA will live in BECA’s volunteer housing in Cofradia and will be responsible for planning and executing all daily activities at our camp at San Jeronimo Bilingual School. Instructors will work with students in 1st - 5th grades. The goal is to make the summer program a fun way for students to maintain/increase their English language ability and reduce summer learning loss.

Instructors will plan activities across all disciplines including art, reading and writing, and physical education. Summer Camp runs for 3 weeks from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm Monday through Friday. Lunch is served at the school for camp counselors and the remainder of the afternoon is free for you to plan the next day's lessons, work on a team project, and go on home visits and immerse yourself in the community. Over the weekends, most volunteers travel throughout Honduras to go to the beach, lake, or mountains, or to nearby Copan to explore the Mayan Ruins.

Prospective candidates should be enthusiastic, creative, and committed to making a positive impact in the summer months of BECA's students.

About Bilingual Education for Central America (BECA)

Location:

PO Box 7400, New York, NY 10150, US

Mission Statement

BECA exists to provide high quality, affordable bilingual education to the educationally disenfranchised while fostering meaningful cultural exchange.

Description

Bilingual Education for Central America (BECA) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization founded in 2002. What began as an idea born in the homes of several Honduran families has since grown into three community-supported bilingual schools run in partnership with low-income communities in Honduras. Our volunteer-driven bilingual school model creates an environment in which Central American students learn from dedicated volunteer teachers, and those volunteers learn from the community in which they are immersed.

Our model is built on partnership between Hondurans committed to high quality, progressive education and international volunteers interested in a truly meaningful cultural collaboration. We are not so arrogant to think that we North Americans can solve Central America’s problems unilaterally. We alone do not have the answers to the region’s challenges, which is why we hold collaboration with local partners as an article of faith. Only if we work together with respect, honesty, integrity, and equality, do we believe we will accomplish our goal of achieving a sustainable educational and economic transformation.
