Did you know that nearly 1 million adults in Los Angeles face literacy or language barriers?
Join us to share your love of reading and:
-- Learn new skills! We provide all the training, materials, and support you'll need to be effective.
-- Meet great people from different cultures and places.
-- Face challenges and learn how to overcome them.
-- Develop (or grow!) a passion for learning and teaching others.
-- Create real and meaningful change in your own community.
-- Gain great experience that can be applied in multiple job fields.
Volunteers are fundamental to the success of library literacy services. Without people like you we can't partner with adults to overcome literacy barriers and close skill gaps to create opportunity for individuals, their families, and the communities of Los Angeles.
Won't you join us?
No teaching background is required. All volunteer tutors receive free training and materials. We ask for 2 to 3 hours a week for a minimum of 6 months.
Virtual volunteers will utilize basic technology to interact with an adult learner via an agreed upon platform, e.g. telephone call, Google Meet, Zoom.

Mission Statement
The Los Angeles Public Library provides free and easy access to information, ideas, books and technology that enrich, educate and empower every individual in our city's diverse communities.
Description
The Los Angeles Public Library is largest public research institution west of the Mississippi.
With more than 70 branch libraries and Central Library subject departments serving millions of Angelenos on a yearly basis, our programs are supported by thousands of volunteers in a variety of capacities. Whether providing one on one literacy tutoring, cutting out craft supplies for story time activities, helping serve summer lunch at the library, or serving as a Friend of the Library, all volunteers play a role in the work of LAPL.
If you would like to volunteer, but don't see a listing that matches your interests, please contact your local branch or the Volunteer Engagement Office. Opportunities and needs vary by location and fluctuate throughout the year.
Please note that the minimum age for volunteers is 14 (with the exception of 11-13-year-olds joining Teen Councils), minimum time commitments are required for most opportunities, adult volunteers working with children will be fingerprinted, and LAPL does not accept court-mandated community service.
