Megan at NPH Honduras

Do you love children? Are you interested in serving in Latin America for a year? NPH USA helps screen, place and support volunteers who serve for 13 months or more in 1 of the 9 homes of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH): Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Peru, and the Dominican Republic are currently looking for volunteers! For the last 70 years Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos has provided a loving home to orphaned, abandoned and at-risk children. Children are not up for adoption, but live in a family environment where they receive love, education, health care, and life skills. ( nph.org/volunteer)

Basic Requirements:

  • 21 years or older
  • Proficient in spoken Spanish
  • Experience working with children
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team, but can also take initiative and work independently
  • Must be creative, patience, resourceful and flexible
  • Organizational and time-management skills to plan and maintain patient schedule, as well as documentation and reports

Benefits and costs:

  • Volunteers receive room and board, a small stipend and access to limited health care.
  • NPH USA pays for health insurance that covers volunteers while they are abroad.
  • Volunteers must pay for their transportation to and from the country where they will serve, as well as any pre-trip expenses like vaccines and language school (if needed).

Volunteers must commit for 13 months, be at least 21 years old, have an intermediate-level of spoken Spanish and have a job on site during the day. Most volunteers work in education, administration, youth development, and health care. In addition to their job, volunteers spend time with a group of children each evening. Volunteers live in community with other international volunteers from around the world.

NPH does NOT require program fees before you leave home. Rather, we provide room and board, a modest stipend, and international health care while you are abroad, serving at one of our homes. Volunteers must pay for their flights to and from the countries where they serve.

All of our homes accept volunteers to begin in either July or January, and it is best to apply 6-9 months in advance of the start date. We have a July 1 deadline for January applications, and a January 1 deadline for July applications. We accept applications after those deadlines, but we like to receive them all by the same date if possible. Please apply even if the deadline has passed. See all current job openings at https://www.nph.org/volunteer-openings/ for the next departure date.
