Join the Lower East Side arts community by becoming a volunteer at Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space! Through monthly artist/curator discussions, visitor engagement, and community outreach, our volunteers develop their interest and understanding of the non-profit local arts organization, while providing general operative assistance for our artist and curator-centered gallery.
Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space is dedicated to supporting and strengthening the careers of emerging and underrepresented artists and independent curators. Uniquely situated inside the Essex Street Market, Cuchifritos’ position outside of the borders and confines of traditional art venues compels artists, curators, and audience members to interrogate, study and analyze questions of ethics, immigration, ecology, and power amongst the orderly chaos of the market space. Cuchifritos responds to and reflects the environment it inhabits, preserving the collaborative artistic spirit of the LES. Our dedicated team of volunteers team serves an integral role in ensuring we continue to meet this mission.
Commitment: 3 months during which volunteers choose their own schedule (Tues-Sun 12-6)
Duties include gallery sitting, familiarization with the work on-view, and engaging visitors and answering related questions. When possible, volunteers are also invited to assist artists and curators with install/de-install, update social media accounts, promote gallery programming in the local community, and document installations and exhibition-related events.

About Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space
Location:
120 Essex Street, inside the Essex Street Market, New York, NY 10002, US
Mission Statement
Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space is a program of Artists Alliance Inc (AAI), a 501c3 not for profit organization located on the Lower East Side. We provide exhibition opportunities to hundreds of independent curators and emerging underrepresented artists. The gallery's location inside the Essex Street Market creates a distinct opportunity to directly engage with the local community about contemporary art. AAI is interested in promoting contemporary artwork in all media, to be shown within a local community setting, though we do not promote community-based art. We seek exhibitions featuring the work of emerging and underrepresented contemporary artists and the curators who seek to exhibit these artists work in a clear and concise context. In addition, we are particularly interested in exhibits that may relate to the Essex Market or Lower East Side area.
Description
Cuchifritos operates by inviting independent curators to submit proposals. In addition, anyone wishing to submit a proposal may do so by following the submission policy and guidelines listed on our website. Each Spring a curatorial advisory committee composed of curators and arts professionals from diverse backgrounds choose exhibits from the submissions. Cuchifritos presents contemporary art exhibits featuring the work of emerging or under represented artists, and exhibits involving a clear conceptual theme structured to put the work of these artists in context. The gallery's location is designed to underscore the community value of The Essex Street Market by provoking interaction and debate between the multi-cultural local community and the artwork presented.
