ORGANIZATION: The Salvation Army - San Jose, CA

Volunteer Title: Exercise Instructor for Seniors

Reports To: Deborah Reynolds

Schedule: Mondays thru Thursdays, for ~1 hour select time between 10:30am-11:30am (1 volunteer needed each week)

Position Overview: The Exercise Instructor will lead dynamic exercise classes that blend fitness with artistic expression to seniors. This role requires a strong background in both dance and fitness, along with the ability to motivate and inspire seniors of varying skill levels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Class Instruction:
    • Design and lead engaging exercise classes, incorporating various styles.
    • Ensure classes are suitable for diverse fitness levels and adapt exercises as needed.
  • Participant Engagement:
    • Build a welcoming and supportive environment to encourage participation and foster community.
  • Performance Preparation:
    • Organize and oversee performances or showcases, encouraging students to display their progress.
    • Prepare choreography and routines for special events.
  • Health and Safety:
    • Ensure all classes are conducted in a safe manner and adhere to health regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Certification in group fitness, dance, or a related field (e.g., Line Dance, Yoga, Zumba).
  • Strong knowledge of dance techniques and fitness principles.
  • Excellent communication and motivational skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to demonstrate dance movements and fitness routines.
  • Must be encouraging and capable of participating in all classes scheduled.

Working Conditions

May be required to stand or sit for extended periods of time.

Please be aware this role requires indoor activity and is working with seniors (55+ years old)

Appropriate Attire: Please wear closed-toe shoes (not sandals, heels, flipflops). Shirts should be short or long-sleeved (no spaghetti straps, strapless, sleeveless, mid-riff showing or tank top types). Shorts/dresses/skirts should be longer in length, appropriate for comfortably bending and reaching items.

Required:

· Age Requirements: 18 or older. You must be confirmed to participate. No walk-ins.

· Register as volunteer for Senior Exercise Instructor

· Complete onboarding paperwork

· Attend Volunteer Orientation

· Volunteers going over 20 hours must complete a Background Check
