Happy Smiles at SEA Literacy
Because learning is fun here!

Enjoy working with kids ages 5 - 8 years old in our special youth room! Their big smiles and bigger hearts will warm your soul. These are refugee children who have varying levels of English and come from different places around the world. They are all united in one aspect: as refugees, they fled their homelands in hope of safety. Most of the kids have parents or siblings who are receiving tutoring at the same time, either in ESL or with schoolwork.

Please help these children improve their English literacy and fluency in English--in most cases, their parents are not able to read to them or help with homework. One favorite book is Brown Bear--the children know every word. Besides reading, me is also spent playing with toys and trying to speak English as much as possible. Most of these children do not practice English at home.

We have volunteers ranging from fifth grade to high school, college, and all ages of life. Our program has a number of families that volunteer together, too! It is wonderful to see young volunteers reading and making peer-to-peer connections with our students.

Our Program meets:

Tuesdays 6:00 - 8:00pm
Saturdays 10:00am - noon

We have Facebook (SEA Literacy), Twitter and Instagram (@SEALmke)!

About SEA Literacy

Location:

2819 W. RICHARDSON PLACE, MILWAUKEE, WI 53208, US

Mission Statement

SEA Literacy uplifts the lives of refugee students in the Milwaukee area by empowering them to become engaged members of this diverse, dynamic community. Our goal is to foster social and educational development, thus creating community leaders and inspiring future generations. We are also committed to providing the Milwaukee community the opportunity to reach out to their new neighbors and strengthen harmony in our city!

Description

SEA Literacy (SEAL) provides year-round ESL lessons, homework tutoring, and recreational activities to refugee youth grades kindergarten through college. We meet on Tuesday evenings 6-8 pm and Saturdays mornings 10 am- 12 and we also go on field trips and have special events throughout the year. Children in this program attend by choice; they want to learn because they want to learn English, do better in the classroom and meet other kids. This is an advantage of volunteering here; you can see immediate improvement! SEAL focuses on helping refugee students, who have been in the US anywhere from a month to a few years, to help them be more fluent in English and more connected with peers and society. As a volunteer you will be helping the students read, learn and speak English, play games, work on STEM or art projects and/or assist them in doing their homework. If you have a skill you can teach (kids LOVE chess but need teachers, some taught knitting, etc.) we would love to work with you!
