The Independent Oversight Committee (IOC), formerly the Human Rights Committee, serves to protect the rights of people with developmental disabilities. We are seeking a diverse group of volunteers who have a sincere interest in people with disabilities. Examples of volunteers include: advocates, people interested in social justice and in protecting the rights of all people, people with disabilities and their families, clergy, psychologists, attorneys, social workers, teachers and physicians. HRC volunteers meet once a month (presently, the second Thursday of each month) and should be able to contribute 7-10 hours per month for a minimum of one year. Responsibilities include: review behavior treatment plans for possible rights violations, review incident reports, review research proposals, and make recommendations to DES/DDD about changes needed to protect the rights of people with developmental disabilities. General orientation and HIPAA training will be provided, as well as other relevant training. If you believe that every person is entitled to treatment with dignity and respect, and the same basic rights regardless of a disability, we would like to hear from you! NOTE: Current DDD staff and contracted providers are not eligible for this volunteer position. For more information, please contact Donna-Marie Terranova, Volunteer Coordinator, at DTerranova@azdes.gov.
