Grow Brooklyn is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to enable members of its community to preserve and grow their assets, thereby securing their economic future. It is with this mission that we recognized the opportunity over 18 years ago to start a Free Tax Prep Program program for Brooklyn residents. NYC Free Tax Prep sites are operated by community-based organizations like us in partnership with the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DWCP).

As Brooklyn’s largest noncommercial tax provider, our tax prep program now reaches North, South, East, West, and Central Brooklyn! This is, in large part, thanks to our volunteer tax preparers.

Volunteers will be tasked with helping us prepare and, for more advanced volunteers, to review returns as well. Tax Preparers help with completing high quality tax returns for low- and middle-income New Yorkers. You can also help with running the site doing intakes or interpreting. Our ideal volunteers would have a high interest and motivation for using or building tax preparation knowledge. Most of all, our volunteers should be able to practice patience, good customer service skills, and have a good sense of humor! This will ensure your success and our success. This is a great opportunity to build valuable work experience, meet new friends, and help people who need it.

Benefits

Wide ranging benefits include building on or learning new skills and valuable professional experience with active work duties. You will be an IRS certified tax preparer, as well. Additionally, we have served as professional references for many of our volunteers. College students, CPAs, Attorneys, and Enrolled Agents also receive Continuing Education Credits upon completion of volunteer service.

Build a sense of achievement for directly and positively affecting your fellow New Yorkers by providing them with top quality tax service without the predatory service fees associated with retail tax providers. And, we’ll also provide snacks.

General Requirements

No experience is necessary! And if you have experience, you can obtain our Advanced certification to help even further. We provide training and mentorship so that you can prepare for and pass the certification exam created by the IRS. We will ask you to complete an orientation, either virtually or in-person. Here we will go over your availability and commitment, which should be about 3-horus per week or 6 hours bi-weekly.

Certification

All tax preparers must pass the IRS Volunteer Basic or Advanced Certification online. We will provide instructions regarding this when it is available.
