Home with Friends

1 hour weekly!

The Home with Friends program gives you the chance to get to know your Special Friends in the environment they are most comfortable in; their own homes. Together you can bake cookies, play games, create arts and crafts items, play in the snow, read books, or do just about anything you can think of! The opportunities are endless for the two of you to have a great time together - it's no wonder children with special-needs often wait the whole week for the moment their "Friend" (that's you) walks through the door! A Home with Friends volunteer coordinator will set you up with a family, tell you everything you need to know, and constantly keep in touch with you to make sure everything runs smoothly. So make the highlight of the child's week yours too - join Home with Friends today!

Mission Statement

Circle of Friends is a volunteer organization that reaches out to children, teens and adults with special needs and involves them in a full array of inclusive social experiences and play dates. Our innovative programming is designed to foster a relationship between children, teens and adults with special needs and community teenage volunteers. In addition to helping those in need, Circle of Friends empowers and enriches its network of volunteers (the majority of whom are teenagers) by enabling them to reap the vast rewards of participating in a program that strengthens their personal connections to the community by giving back to the community.

Description

Home with Friends : Children and teens with special needs are partnered with teenage volunteers who visit them weekly in their homes and establish meaningful, shared experiences. The volunteers are screened and receive training and orientation from professionals in the field of special education prior to their home visits.

Sunday Circle/Teen Scene: Once a month on Sundays throughout the school calendar year, our teenage volunteers and their friends spend two wonderful hours together. In a fun filled atmosphere, highlighting a seasonal holiday or theme, participants enjoy a wide variety of activities such as music, art, sports, snack, baking, cooking and story time. Professionals in the field of special education and therapists lead the activities. Parents receive a respite as their children engage in an afternoon of quality social and educational activities.

Tuesday Circle: Circle of Friends hosts a monthly program on Tuesday evenings for young adults and adults with special needs. Participants are transported to and from their group residences and homes and then join together with volunteers to socialize, enjoy music, dance, art, snack, games, cooking and baking.
