Give the gift of literacy!
Come to our 5-week tutor training workshop and get matched with an adult/s in Mercer County who need help learning how to read, write, listen to, and speak English better. Our tutors make a wonderful difference in our students' lives. From one of our students: "I was afraid to speak. Lack of confidence makes my English even worse. ... In two years, I went from barely speaking to confidently speaking to any customer who approached me in the store without any problems." Our volunteers tell us over and over that they get as much out of the tutoring relationship as they give. Doesn't this sound like a great way to give to your community?
Prospective volunteers attend 10 hours of online tutor training (on Zoom, 2 hours 1x a week for 5 weeks). After training, volunteers are matched with a small group of adult students or one-to-one and work with their program lead to plan classes and locate resources. Volunteers are invited to attend quarterly workshops and an annual conference to continue developing their tutoring skills.
We are currently offering these tutor training sessions:
Tuesdays, 6 to 8 p.m., August 13, 20, 27 & Sept. 3 & 10
These will be online training, with 5 face-to-face sessions on Zoom and some independent assignments. No teaching experience necessary! The training will provide you with all the necessary skills and support to become an effective tutor. After the training, you'll be ready to start meeting with a student/s once a week.
