Bay State Learning Center, a small nonprofit non-coercive self-directed learning center, is a different option for adolescents and teens to learn and grow. We have students from 10 to 18 years old, all of whom are excited to learn and dig deeper into subjects then public school allows them.

We are looking from someone who is interested in helping us run a weekly, hour-long personality and real-world focused psychology class for our teens. It would be very open and flexible as far as what is covered; most classes in our center are discussion driven and allow the students to direct to flow of content. They very much enjoyed a personality theory class in the past where they could learn about psychology as well as themselves.

A great volunteer would be someone with a passion for the subject and an interest in teens. Someone who wants to add enrichment to adolescents' lives. OR someone who would like to try a different type of teaching then many instructors are used to. No instructional experience necessary - just excitement!

Classes are small or maybe one-on-one and do not require any grading or assessment. All the volunteer instructor would be asked beyond teaching is to note who attended and make a very short summary of what was discussed.

We are flexible and love to add diversity to our students education, so any type of time commitment you are open to could help. We would very much love a volunteer who could commit to teach at least 8 weeks or one semester, but even one-time workshops add enrichment to our program.

Transportation to Dedham is required, and you must be available between 10am and 2pm Monday-Thursday.

THANKS!

Mission Statement

Bay State Learning Cooperative is a non-coercive learning environment for students ages 10-19. We do not have grades, tests, or specific curricular requirements. At Bay State Learning Center we think that the best and most lasting kind of learning is self-directed learning. At BSLC each student has the opportunity to work with a mentor to design a specialized learning program to fit his or her own needs, strengths, and interests. In addition to personalized support and a regular schedule of optional classes, BSLC provides a safe, comfortable environment where students can work, socialize, and thrive free of the coercion and pressure of traditional school.

Description

BSLC serves all kinds of students from successful straight A students who are bored or uninspired, to students who struggle with the imposed structure of school, to students who are disengaged and uninterested in standardized course work. Some want a better outlet for their creative ambitions and others have a specific area or discipline they want to focus on but find that the demands of school displace their interests. BSLC is for kids who need an open, flexible environment where they can find the security and freedom to succeed without irrelevant demands, arbitrary standardization, and institutional uniformity. Students like this can learn more and significantly improve their lives by leaving traditional school behind, and BSLC can provide them the opportunity to do so.
