About
Join Easterseals Respite Services to give parents a much-needed temporary break from day-to-day caregiving duties. In-Center Weekend Respite serves little warriors (children whose parents were injured in war) veterans, active-duty military, first responders, civilian families, and families with children with and without disabilities.
The Fun You Will Have:
These respite events take place one Saturday a month and each respite event is planned to include a different monthly theme and ensure a variety of interactive activities. The children and their paired volunteer will be able to unleash their imagination in a world of hands-on discovery with painting, drawing, sculpting, and other creative activities.
As a volunteer, you will spend the day paired one-on-one with a child. Each volunteer/child match will be hand-selected based on the volunteer's and child's screening forms.
Lunch and snacks are included, along with a monthly raffle.
* Please note this is not a one-time commitment. We want to have established volunteers who can attend as often as they are able.
Volunteer Benefits!
- Build a friendship with your "matched" child for the day
- Join a team of volunteers with similar interests
- Attend fun and educational respite activities
- Improve physical and mental health
- Great for groups/businesses who want to give back
- Make a lasting impact on a family, child, and community
- Make a difference for a military, veteran, wounded warrior, civilian and/or a family who has a child with a disability
We hope to see you at the next event!
Please note the following:
- A COVID-19 policies and procedures document will need to be signed.
- You must complete required forms (background check, screening form, etc.) and have a confirmation from the respite team prior to attending the event.
- Minimum age requirement is 17 years old. If you have a younger child (14+) who you feel is mature enough to volunteer alongside you, this may be an option. This is case by case.
- Each child is paired one-on-one with a volunteer to spend the day with.
- It is imperative that volunteers who RSVP attend the event and stay for its entirety.
If you competed an inquiry, I will send you an e-mail from mjaster@eseal.org to your personal e-mail box that you provided. Please be sure to check spam/junk folders for my email.

Mission Statement
Easterseals DC MD VA enriches lives and expands opportunities for all children and adults in our communities, including people with disabilities and military backgrounds. As the Easterseals affiliate serving Washington, DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia, Easterseals DC MD VA works through public-private partnerships to provide community-based services in the most efficient manner possible. These traits were demonstrated in the opening our Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Inter-Generational Center, which has quickly become an international model of excellence for delivering superior outcomes, including creating meaningful connections between generations. It was opened through visionary partnership among local, state, and national governments, as well as private individual, corporate, and foundation investment. The shared resources created a maximum return on investment for the community.
Description
Easterseals DC MD VA is leading the way to full equity, inclusion, and access through direct and life-changing disability and community services.
Since 1945, Easterseals DC MD VA has worked tirelessly to enhance quality of life and expand access to healthcare, education, and employment. And we won’t rest until each one of us is valued, respected, and accepted.
We take a holistic approach, providing comprehensive services to thousands of children and adults in our neighborhoods, no matter their disability, military status, income, race, or age: To help each child reach their full potential, we provide personalized child development and early intervention services. To improve health and reduce isolation in adults with disabilities, we offer engaging activities and expansive resources. To enable military families to integrate into the community, we provide a suite of services, including employment support and mental healthcare. And to sustain families and caregivers, we provide comprehensive services and supports.
Together with our partners, we’re reducing poverty and homelessness and improving healthcare and employment by empowering people of all ages and abilities to be full and equal participants in their communities. Join us.
