SEA Literacy is an organization that helps refugee students in Milwaukee to be more fluent in English and provides resources to succeed. We directly serve students ranging from 6th Grade through College. As a volunteer with our organization, your primary focus will be assisting students with homework, ESL(English as a second language) activities, and developing social skills. Our students range from age 12 to 23, so there is opportunity to work with students of all ages.
Our sessions are Tuesdays 6-8pm and Saturdays 10am-noon at the Neighborhood House in Milwaukee. You can choose which day you would like to volunteer or choose to volunteer on both days if you would like.
We love to see the Milwaukee community volunteer their special skills to help brighten the future of refugees in the area. This is an open invitation to you as an interested volunteer to reach out to us and let us know how you would like to help!
Please see additional COVID-19 requirements.

Description
SEA Literacy (SEAL) provides year-round ESL lessons, homework tutoring, and recreational activities to refugee youth grades kindergarten through college. We meet on Tuesday evenings 6-8 pm and Saturdays mornings 10 am- 12 and we also go on field trips and have special events throughout the year. Children in this program attend by choice; they want to learn because they want to learn English, do better in the classroom and meet other kids. This is an advantage of volunteering here; you can see immediate improvement! SEAL focuses on helping refugee students, who have been in the US anywhere from a month to a few years, to help them be more fluent in English and more connected with peers and society. As a volunteer you will be helping the students read, learn and speak English, play games, work on STEM or art projects and/or assist them in doing their homework. If you have a skill you can teach (kids LOVE chess but need teachers, some taught knitting, etc.) we would love to work with you!
