Can you imagine life without literacy? How would you...

  • Get a job, or train for a better job?
  • Talk with doctors, neighbors, and businesses?
  • Discuss your child's progress at school?
  • Perform simple tasks such as phone calls, emails, shopping, banking, getting insurance?
You can make a difference by volunteering 1.5 hours per week to help adults learn to read, write, or speak English. The Community Literacy Council provides comprehensive tutor training for volunteers, usually in January, May, and September. Most of our adult students are learning English as a second language.
Our next training sessions
will take place virtually via Zoom on the following dates:
  • Thursday, January 30, 2024, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

AND

  • Saturday, February 2, 2024, 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

You can find more information about volunteering:

Mission Statement

Providing adults with basic reading, writing and communication skills so they may participate in their community and reach their fullest potential in life.

Description

We are a volunteer, non-profit organization that provides free tutors to adults in western Wayne County with literacy skills below 9th grade level. The majority of our students have relocated to our area from other countries and are learning English as a second language. We provide 12 hours of comprehensive training for tutors before they are matched with an adult student of their choice.

Our tutors meet with students one-on-one in a public location, at 4 conversation group locations, and in ESL adult education classes.

We have a growing demand for tutors in our community and welcome new tutors and students to contact us.
