Home Cook Heroes

Gift of Life Howie's House serves as a "home away from home" for transplant patients and their families by providing temporary, affordable lodging and support services to those who travel to Philadelphia for transplant-related care. Through our Home Cook Heroes Program, we are able to guarantee our families a home-cooked meal each night of their stay, thanks to volunteers like you.

Home Cook Heroes can provide a meal in three possible ways.

  1. On-Site Meal Preparation
  2. Drop-Off
  3. Catering

On-Site Meal Preparation: Our on-site meal preparation is limited to ten participants. Participants will prepare the meal in our kitchen which is equipped with four stoves, four ovens, and four microwaves. Kitchen tools are also provided for meal preparation.

Drop-Off: Groups of any size have the opportunity to prepare a meal at home and drop it off at the House on their scheduled date.

Catering: Participants place an order at a restaurant of their choice to be delivered at the House for our families.

Please note that your group is responsible for purchasing any ingredients that will be used for your meal. For each of these meal opportunities, staff will contact the group's leader with additional information and guidelines.

Mission Statement

Gift of Life Howie's House serves as a "home away from home" for transplant patients and their families by providing temporary, affordable lodging, and supportive services to those who travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for transplant-related care. Our Volunteer Program is a critical component of our mission. Whether it's cooking a meal, answering the phone, transporting our guests, or thanking our donors, Howie's House volunteers are the "Heart of the House."

Description

Gift of Life Donor Program is the largest organ procurement organization (OPO) in the United States, leading the nation in the number of organ donors since 2008. Serving more than 11.3 million people across the eastern half of Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and Delaware, we help and heal lives by coordinating the recovery and distribution of organs and tissues used in life-saving and life-enhancing transplants.
Many living outside of the Gift of Life service area travel to the Philadelphia area from outside the region for transplant-related care. Gift of Life Howie's House serves as a "home away from home" for these transplant patients and their families. Howie's House House not only provides housing but also home-cooked meals, transportation to and from local hospitals, and a community atmosphere for patients and families.
