Make a positive difference in another person’s life. Volunteers are needed to tutor, teach, and mentor adult students. LEAP, the Richmond Public Library’s adult literacy program, provides vital educational services to adults who want to improve their reading and writing skills. The program matches volunteer tutors one-to-one with adult learners. Together, the volunteer and the student build a relationship that is based on a shared desire to reach educational goals.

As LEAP serves the community, we recognize that volunteers are one of our most vital resources. We are currently looking for volunteers to perform a variety of roles including as one-to-one tutors, teaching assistants, and computer coaches. LEAP has both daytime and evening opportunities available. Volunteers must be 21 years of age and have a high school diploma (or equivalent). LEAP asks for a minimum of a 6-month commitment. In addition, successful volunteers are flexible, dedicated, and empathetic to the students.

Volunteering for LEAP is a great way to learn new skills, affect positive change, and have a fundamental influence on young people's lives..

Please fill out our online application here: http://www.ci.richmond.ca.us/forms.aspx?FID=167, send an email to Anna_Chapman @ci.richmond.ca.us or call me at (510) 620-6684 to learn about our next orientation.

Mission Statement

The Richmond Public Library and LEAP are dedicated to free and equal access to education, independent lifelong learning, and the joys of knowledge for our community. Our goal is for everyone to know how to read in Richmond, California.

Description

LEAP, formed in 1984, is one of the first library literacy programs in the state of California. As a free program sponsored by the Richmond Public Library, LEAP depends on a small dedicated staff and many hard-working volunteers to meet the needs of the residents. LEAP is a program committed to increasing literacy for use in daily life. At LEAP we offer tutoring and small group instruction to insure that all adults can be literate, self-sufficient and welcoming of new ideas and information.
Our programs are GED Preparation, Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language and Reading and Math Improvement
We want everyone to pass their GED, get their high school diploma, improve their English or enhance their reading, writing and math skills. We need tutors to supplement our teachers' curriculum, to partner with our students in meeting their GED goals and who have the time and the compassion to team up with our ESL students to augment their classwork.

This August 2022, there will be 30 students graduating with either their GED or high school diploma. This is a major accomplishment for LEAP. To have that many graduates during a pandemic, is a testament to the commitment of our students and the dedication of our teachers and tutors. We are very proud of everyone who has ever graduated from LEAP and are devoted to anyone who walks through our doors or signs in online for classes. Please consider joining LEAP as a volunteer tutor. We really need you.
