ORGANIZATION: South San Francisco Public Library

Join our incredible group of volunteer tutors and make a lasting difference in someone’s life... perhaps your own. Become a literacy tutor! Project Read offers the invaluable gift of free one-on-one tutoring for adults struggling with essential reading, writing, and spelling skills. We are passionately seeking both learners and dedicated tutors for our program, and we provide comprehensive training at no cost for our tutors.

Supervisor: South San Francisco Public Library's Literacy Services Coordinator for Project Read's Adult Program

Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per week (minimum 1 tutoring session per week and a 6 months time commitment required.)

Duties (may include):

After attending tutor training, the following is expected

  • Meet regularly and punctually with your learner
  • Plan and conduct lessons tailored to your learner’s specific needs, learning styles,
    and interests
  • Review and reinforce learning frequently - praise often
  • Attend Project Read continuing education workshops assigned throughout the year
  • Check in with the Project Read office regularly concerning learner progress
  • Online monthly reporting of learner's progress

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Age, 18
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with individuals of diverse cultures, age groups, abilities, genders, ethnicities, and races.
  • Patient, dependable, and timely
  • Respectful of confidentiality
  • Able to read and write English
  • Flexible
  • Friendly
  • Optimistic
  • Sense of humor is helpful

Professional training as a teacher is not required but college degree preferred
