Open My World Therapeutic Riding Center is seeking compassionate and enthusiastic volunteers to join our equine therapy program! We are a small nonprofit organization in Leander and we provide Equine Assisted Services to participants living with physical, emotional and cognitive disabilities, as well as those facing mental health challenges. 2024 brings with it a ton of new opportunities to grow with the new, innovative programs we have developed, allowing us to expand our reach. Become a part of a team that makes a real difference in people's lives, every day.
Horse leads are responsible for guiding the horse during therapy sessions. This role is vital as it ensures the safety and comfort of the horse, instructor and the participant. The horse lead must be attentive and skilled in handling horses, often needing to interpret and respond to the horse's silent cues, body language and behavior, which can directly affect the therapy's effectiveness. This is a good opportunity for someone with horse experience.
Side walkers are equally important in what we do. They walk alongside the participant, providing physical support, encouragement, and assistance as needed. This role is crucial for participants who require additional stability or are working on building confidence around horses. Side walkers help create a safe, supportive environment that enables participants to engage fully with the therapy. This is a good opportunity for someone with or without horse experience.
Both horse leads and side walkers have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with the horses and participants. These connections can be so rewarding, as you will get to witness firsthand, the positive changes in the participants and the special bond that forms between them and the horses.

Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide a safe and compassionate environment that fosters physical, emotional and behavioral growth, while utilizing the intuitive nature of the horse.
Description
Our Equine Assisted programs provide a unique form of physical therapy that is both unique and effective. Horses have a natural gait that closely mimics human walking, making them a perfect choice for individuals with physical disabilities and injuries. Some of the many benefits include improved balance, strength and coordination in addition to the incredible mental health benefits that horses naturally provide. Horses have a calming effect on people, which can help reduce anxiety, stress, and depression. The act of caring for a horse also teaches responsibility and can help build confidence and self-esteem. Participants with PTSD or addiction, for example, can benefit from equine therapy by learning coping skills and developing a sense of trust and connection with their therapy horse.
Horses provide a non-judgmental and despite their size, a non-threatening environment. This can benefit children and adults with mental illness, behavioral issues and learning disabilities by improving communication, relieving anxiety, increasing focus and so much more.
Our instructors encourage participants to be as involved in our program , off the horse, as they would like. We have several riders who have become some of our best volunteers, which has opened up new opportunities in their lives outside of the barn that they may not have pursued in the past.
