Please visit the new page to apply.
Volunteers assist newly arrived refugees and immigrants in learning how to ride the bus and understand the local transportation system. Public transportation is essential to new Americans who don’t have access to cars to connect with different services, to build confidence in themselves, and grant them freedom in their new surroundings. Volunteers will:
- Meet client at client’s home
- Call when 10 minutes away/on the way
- Explain briefly what you’ll be showing them. Ask if they have any questions
- Ride bus/train with client to given destination (Grocery store or English Class) and back to their home, explaining the process and important things to know (1 trip expected per shift)
Time Commitment:
Commit to at least 3 shifts a month. You pick the exact dates that work for you. Shifts are offered Tuesdays and Thursdays between 11am and 3pm, starting on the hour (11am, 12pm, 1pm, or 2pm). Shifts last 1-2.5 hours, depending on distance/length of specific trip. Minimum of 3 months
Qualifications sought:
- Patient, flexible, and adaptable in communicating cross-culturally and with non-native English speakers
- Knowledge of and experience with public transportation
- Basic knowledge of a Smart Phone, Google Translate, Google Maps, and Transit apps
