Purpose: Science Communication Volunteers work in the Visitor & School Engagement Department to deliver exciting and memorable experiences for guests to Great Lakes Science Center.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage guests throughout the museum galleries; including the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, BioMedical Technology Gallery, Science Phenomenon Gallery, and Polymer Fun House (early childhood) area to serve as Exhibit Interpreters. By interacting with visitors of all ages to enhance their understanding of science concepts and provide them with a memorable, fun experience, you can inspire our guests and make sure they come back.
  • Volunteers will alternate through various galleries throughout the day and may execute repeated performances such as operating the " Bridge of Fire", one of our signature exhibits, as a way to charge up our audience.
  • May serve as primary greeter for school groups visiting Great Lakes Science Center on field trips to instruct students of Science Center rules, organize and relocate lunch bins, distribute wristbands, and serve in way finding.
  • Volunteers also perform hands-on engagement opportunities through Mobile Science Explorer Carts. With dozens of cart topics to choose from, Mobile Science Explorer Carts allow volunteers an opportunity to present a topic to a small group of guests and get them excited about what they will see throughout the museum.
  • Each season brings to the Science Center new and exciting traveling exhibitions. Use your expertise and passion to enhance the experience for our guests. Volunteers move throughout the traveling exhibition gallery and interact with guests as exhibit interpreters and with hands-on activities such as Mobile Science Explorer Carts and "pocket props". Mythbusters: the Explosive Exhibition ™ opens February 7, 2015.
  • Seasonally, volunteers serve as Steamship William G. Mather Facilitators. Learn the facts about the Great Lakes! A story of history, technology and innovation plus the importance of the Mather and similar ships to the development of great industries which built Cleveland and the nation (seasonal hours May-October).

Time Commitment: Volunteers are required to work a minimum of one 4 hour shift per week for three months. Additionally, mandatory training occurs three times per year on designated weekends or evenings for 3 hours each.

Mission Statement

Our mission is simple: to make Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) come alive. The Science Center envisions a community where all people value science, technology, engineering and math to inform decision-making and enrich lives.

Description

Great Lakes Science Center, home of the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, makes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) come alive for more than 300,000 visitors a year through hundreds of hands-on exhibits, temporary exhibitions, the Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater, historic Steamship William G. Mather, daily science demonstrations, seasonal camps, and more. The Science Center is funded in part by the citizens of Cuyahoga County through Cuyahoga Arts and Culture. Visit GreatScience.com for more information.

Volunteers are an integral part of our workshops, science shows, special events and the overall welcoming atmosphere of fun and curiosity cultivated by the Science Center. Volunteers assist our guest engagement staff, man our information desk, lead tours aboard the historic Steamship William G. Mather and so much more. Our Volunteers enjoy bringing our exhibits to life with additional information and new ways to interact with and learn from them. Creating amazing stories for our visitors through answering questions, one-on-one interaction, and mind-blowing science demonstrations ensures that both the volunteer's, and the guest's, experience is a memorable one.
