About Wilderness Works

Location:

644 MEMORIAL DR SE, ATLANTA, GA 30312, US

Mission Statement

Wilderness Works is guiding disadvantaged Atlanta children toward more fulfilling futures with interactive enrichment programs emphasizing character development, nature discovery and outdoor adventure.

Description

Wilderness Works partners with five Atlanta elementary schools and 4 leading transitional and homeless shelters.

Wilderness Works offers four key programs to primarily elementary aged homeless or disadvantaged children: City Camp, Mini Camp, Summer Camp and Experiential Field Trips. Programming is continuous. Many children spend many years in Wilderness Works programming.

City Camp provides 50 children a 20 hour chaperoned stay at City Camp with three wonderful meals and an overnight starting Friday evenings through Saturday afternoons. After Saturday breakfast a field trip follows including a wide variety of experiences (hiking Stone Mountain to visiting High Museum and much more). City Camp is based in southeast Atlanta just north of Grant Park.

Mini Camp provides 15 - 20 children a smaller version (but likely longer stay - multiple nights) of the City Camp experience. These occur all year long.

Summer Camp: Week long stays at traditional, rustic camps in North Georgia and Western North Carolina.

Experiential Field Trip: Largely camping trips to regional wilderness locations with some visits to cities. Examples: Pisgah National Forest, Cumberland Island, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Ocracoke Island, Skidaway Island.
