What is LIFT?
LIFT’s mission is to help community members achieve economic stability and well-being. We have offices in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, DC which have served more than 40,000 clients and their families in its 15-year history. These offices are staffed by a diverse and dedicated group of volunteers who advocate for change by working side by side with members of the community to help them find jobs, secure stable housing as well as make ends meet through public benefits and quality referrals. LIFT’s advocates guide people out of the cycle of poverty.
Who can be an advocate with LIFT?
Any undergraduate or graduate student who is currently enrolled in classes at a local college or university is eligible to apply. LIFT also accepts applications from professionals who seek to give back to the community.
What is the commitment?
Advocates must volunteer a minimum of 8 hours a week in the office. LIFT-Chicago, Uptown office hours are Monday through Friday 9 am - 5 pm. In addition, there will be outside training events that you need to attend. There will be more information about this to come.
What does an advocate do?
Advocates work side by side with low-income community members by first helping them address immediate needs (e.g. employment, housing, health care, public benefits and/or education) and then providing comprehensive, long-term support to break the cycle of poverty. In addition, advocates participate in community outreach events, get involved in city advocacy to effect policy change and participate in the leadership of the office.
What are the benefits of becoming an advocate?
Advocates have the unique opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with Chicago residents and other individuals who are interested in community service. Our advocates gain the direct exposure, insight and compassion necessary to be lifelong advocates for change to break the cycle of poverty, regardless of the professional path they ultimately pursue. Beyond that, advocates have the opportunity for significant leadership growth and the chance to take charge and shape the direction of a nonprofit organization.
How are advocates trained?
All advocates participate in a comprehensive pre-service training where they are oriented to the services in the Chicago area, become familiar with the LIFT approach to client service and learn how to best assist our clients in achieving economic independence. Throughout their experience, advocates attend trainings where they learn more about specific services in the Chicago area, hear speakers from local community partners and reflect on their service experience with other volunteers.

Mission Statement
LIFT's mission is to help community members achieve economic stability and well-being.
We are working to establish a new standard for holistic and enduring solutions in our country's fight against poverty.
Description
LIFT is a growing movement to help community members acheive economic stability and well-being. We currently run centers staffed by trained volunteers in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C to serve low-income individuals and families. LIFT clients and volunteers work one-on-one to find jobs, secure safe, and stable housing, make ends meet through public benefits and tax credits, and obtain quality referrals for services like Childcare and healthcare.
Simultaneously, the LIFT experience pushes volunteers to grapple with our country's most challenging issues related to poverty, race, inequality, and policy. In LIFT's 14-year history, over 6,000 volunteers have served more than 40,000 individuals and families. By 2014, our goal is that 10,000 LIFT volunteers will have advanced 100,000 clients on their path toward economic stability and personal success.
