Are you interested in helping first-generation students write their own futures?

Every summer, Mission Graduates pairs Writing Partners with high school students to work one-on-one on writing their personal insight questions for college applications and scholarships, meeting weekly throughout the academic year.
With the support of Mission Graduates staff and Writing Partners, this year:
Nine first-generation students from College Connect Cohort 12 have received a total of $244,000 in scholarship awards, with an average of $25,000 per student!
Geri Urgell, Valedictorian at John O'Connell High School and College Connect student, on how her Writing Partner has been an invaluable source of support and motivation:
"Not only did my writing partner help me write essays that got me into multiple universities and scholarship programs, but she also provided me with emotional and mental health support. At times when I felt unmotivated to write my essays, she was there to encourage me to persevere with my work-to remind me of my goals and aspirations. She showed me that she values my education as much as I do."
Kicking off with a two-day Personal Statement Workshop in July, Writing Partners and students work together throughout the academic year to complete personal statements for college applications and scholarships as well as to review English modules to ensure greater success in their first year of college!
When applying, please be sure that you would be able to commit to the following:
Volunteer Orientation, Wednesday July 7th from 5pm-6pm
Two-Day Personal Insight Questions workshops, July 13th, 2021, 5:00pm - 6:30 pm and July 15th, 2021, 5:00pm - 6:30pm
- Weekly, 1.5-hour tutoring sessions during after-work hours with a high school student, starting on the last week of July 2021 - May 2022
We encourage first-generation college graduates, Mission and Excelsior residents, bilingual Spanish-English speakers, and people of color to apply.
Please note that due to COVID-19, Writing Partners and students will meet virtually, with the possibility of
in-person or hybrid activities once it is safe to do so.

Mission Graduates is a nonprofit organization that increases the number of K-12 students in San Francisco's Mission District who are prepared for and complete a college education.
Description
Founded in 1972, Mission Graduates provides a wide range of afterschool, in-school, and summer programs helping to establish college education as an expectation and goal for every child. Each year, Mission Graduates reaches over 3,600 low-income children, youth, and families in San Francisco, emphasizing college as a means to achieve economic equity and strengthen the fabric of our community.
