Join us as a Volunteer Tutor!

The Literacy Alliance of Northeast Florida is seeking dedicated volunteer tutors. Tutors are essential to our mission and play a significant role in making a positive impact on our students' lives. Working with an adult learner is a rewarding experience!

Our Tutors:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age AND pass a background screening

  • Receive online training, curriculum, materials, and support

  • Commit to at least 6 months of volunteering, approximately 1 hour a week

  • Tutor adult students who generally read below a 9th grade level

  • Work one-on-one, with a small group, or computer-based instruction

  • Help a student build reading, language, and/or math skills

  • Help a student work towards earning his/her GED

  • Work during varied times and locations based on student and tutor preferences

  • Are part of a team to change adult lives through literacy!

*Tutor sessions may be completed 100% online or a combination of online/in-person. Students may request online or in-person tutoring support. If online, tutors will need a computer, WiFi, and a phone to participate. If in-person, tutoring is conducted in public locations such as libraries, coffee shops, etc.

Mission Statement

The Literacy Alliance of Northeast Florida’s mission is to increase literacy awareness and improve adult literacy in Jacksonville through formal instruction and volunteer-based tutoring.

Description

The Literacy Alliance offers adults (16 years and older) small group classes, computer-assisted instruction, and one-on-one tutoring to improve reading, writing, and math skills. We also offer workshops/classes in financial literacy, health literacy, and career coaching. All of our classes are 100% free to our students.

This important work would not be possible without the support of the community, volunteers, and donors.
