Tutor a Child, Change a Life
These 4 boys are some of the students in our program. They are behind in math and reading and need your help to get ahead!

The Guatemalan Maya Center needs reading and math tutors for children from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Tutoring is conducted in English, so tutors do not need to speak Spanish. Children are from low-income immigrant families. We ask that you volunteer 1-2 hours per week.

Tutoring is conducted between 3:30 and 5:30 pm on Mondays through Fridays. Children are at two locations of The Escuelita Maya which are located in Lake Worth near the 6th and 10th Ave exits of I-95. Most of the children we tutor were born in the U.S. and speak English but benefit from tutoring conducted in English. Many of our children fall behind in reading and math due to subtle language and culture issues that one-on-one tutoring in reading and math can help overcome. This is a tutoring opportunity with grateful students and parents where volunteer tutors can observe their students mature and improve academically. Tutors must be at least 18 years old.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to use a family-centered approach to provide services to all low-income and immigrant families, with a special focus on the Guatemalan-Mayan. Our mission is to provide services which create a nurturing, stable, and culturally diverse environment empowering those victimized by violence to seek justice and to build community. We accompany the immigrant, the refugee and the disenfranchised through the services of education, health, and immigration, while maintaining cultural continuity, their native language and a strong family. The Center seeks to empower every person it serves to flourish in a new environment while celebrating their culture, native language, and wisdom.

Description

The Center provides unique social services primarily to the Guatemalan-Maya refugee population, but also to all families in need, using a family-centered approach to preserve native language, culture and wisdom while promoting stability, resiliency and efficacy for all.

We provide students with after-school programs, a parent-child home programs to enhance home learning, and adult English classes.

The Center opened "The GMC Boutique" which provides used clothing, household items, and hygiene items to all in need.

We also partner with Department of Children & Families to assist with applications for SNAP (aka food stamps), Medicaid, and Cash Assistance for eligible households.

We need your help to advocate and promote the dignity of the diverse families in our community. Volunteer with us today!
